The “Palio”
is vied among the town suburbs (borghi) and some towns belonging to the
Province of Como in order to win the “palium”, an artistic drape made of
silk. This last is painted by hand every year by excellent artists of
Como. Every suburb, district or town is represented by the following
main characters:
Capitano (Captain)
Portagonfalone (Ensign)
Priore (a member of the governmental authority of the
town)
Castellano (Lord of the castle)
Castellana (Lady of the castle)
